Squads rank among the NCAA's best in Academic Progress Rate
May marks the NCAA's annual announcement of its coveted APR Public Recognition Awards, earned by all teams that score in the top 10 percent of their Division I peers in the most recent Academic Progress Rates (APR).
Â
This year's listing of Public Recognition Award recipients was released Tuesday by the NCAA. Six Tennessee teams earned the honor, setting a new school record.
Â
Tennessee's honorees—each of which posted perfect multi-year APR scores of 1,000—were men's cross country, women's cross country, men's golf, softball, women's track & field and volleyball.
Â
The women's track & field program has earned the award for each of the last five years under head coach Beth Alford-Sullivan, while men's cross country is receiving the honor for the fourth straight year.
Â
The APR is an annual scorecard of academic achievement calculated for all Division I sports teams. The APR measures eligibility, graduation and retention each semester or academic term and provides a clear picture of the academic performance for each team in every sport. All teams must meet an academic threshold of 930 to qualify for the postseason and can face penalties for continued low academic performance.
Â
APR scores for all Division I institutions and teams will be released later this month.
