Cross, Nevin, Named PING All-America Honorable Mentions
April 23, 2020 | Men's Golf
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Tennessee men's golfers Spencer Cross and Rhys Nevin have both been named Division I PING All-America Honorable Mentions, the Golf Coaches Association of America announced Thursday.
Â
Cross and Nevin are Tennessee's first men's golfers to receive All-American recognition since Lorenzo Scalise in 2018.
Â
"I'm extremely happy for Rhys and Spencer to have been named All-Americans," head coach Brennan Webb said. "This is a tremendous honor that requires an extremely high level of consistent success to achieve.
Â
"Both of them are extremely hard workers, not only on the golf course but also in the classroom. They represent our university and our program at the highest levels in every way."
Â
Despite the abbreviated season, Cross and Nevin both finished the season with impressive final numbers.
Â
Cross rounded out the season second on the team in stroke average with a 71.82 mark through 17 total rounds. In a full season, that mark would ranked as the second-best single season stroke average in program history. For his career, Cross has posted a 73.06 stroke average – currently ninth in program history.
"This is an incredible honor and I'm very blessed to be recognized, but I could never imagined this happening without all the support I have had throughout my golfing career," Cross said. "My teammates have pushed me every step of the way and wouldn't want to be doing it with anyone else. Coach Webb and Bo (Andrews) have had a huge impact on my life and golf the past two years and I can't thank them enough."
Â
The Sevierville native finished inside the top-30 of each tournament he competed in during the 2019-20 season, including two fourth-place finishes. At the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate in October, Cross shot 204 (-12), which was the best 54-hole score by a Vol since 2017.
Â
Nevin, one of two Vols to compete in all seven tournaments that Tennessee played as a team, finished out the season with a 72.00 stroke average. Nevin currently has a 72.96 career stroke average, which ranks seventh in program history.
"When I first came to Tennessee, I remember we had to write down some goals for our careers here," Nevin said. "One of mine was to become an All-American.
Â
"As a freshman I didn't really understand how much of a challenge that would be to achieve. So to finally do it with a lot of help from the coaches and the guys on the team is awesome."
The Cheshire, England, native led the team with six top-25 finishes and finished inside the top five on two occasions – the second coming during Tennessee's team win at the Lamkin Grips San Diego Classic.
Â
Nevin also finished tied with Cross for the team lead in rounds of par or better with 11. Nevin currently ranks eighth in program history with 44 career rounds of par or better.
