Tennessee claims its second tournament title of the season
CHULA VISTA, Calif. – The Tennessee men's golf team won its second tournament title of the season Tuesday, coming out on top of the 19-team field at the Lamkin Grips San Diego Classic.
Â
The win marks Tennessee's fifth team tournament title under the direction of head coach Brennan Webb, who is in his second season on Rocky Top. In October, the Vols won the Intercollegiate at the Grove.
Â
"I could not be more proud of this team after our performance the last time out," Webb said. "Everything we talked about doing better we did this week and then some."
Â
The Vols finished four strokes ahead of the rest of the tightly-grouped field, shooting 856 overall (-8). Tennessee entered Tuesday with a two-round total of even par and shot a tournament-best 8-under during round three. All four of Tennessee's counting rounds on Tuesday were under par.
Â
The 19-team field included five top 20 teams and two top five teams.
Â
Rhys Nevin was Tennessee's top finisher of the tournament, tying for fifth place in the 100-golfer field. Nevin shot a three-round total of 213 (-3) with two rounds under par, including Tuesday's third round. The senior shot six birdies overall on Tuesday.
Â
Nevin's fifth-place finish marks the fifth top-five finish of his Tennessee career and his highest finish since he placed fourth at the Carpet Capital Collegiate in September.
Â
Tennessee's second-best score came from redshirt freshman Bryce Lewis, who shot a total of 215 (-1). Lewis tied for 14th place, which marked his fourth top-15 finish of the season. During Tuesday's third round, Lewis also extended his team-lead-tying rounds of par or under to 11 by carding a 71 (-1).
Â
After shooting an 80 (+8) during round one, redshirt junior Hunter Wolcott rebounded to shoot 70 (-2) during round two on Monday, and recorded an even better third round on Tuesday.
Â
Wolcott carded a 67 (-5) in round three, a mark tied for the second-best third round in the entire field. After sitting in a tie for 90th place following round one, Wolcott shot up the leaderboard during rounds two and three all the way up into a tie for 24th place overall. The Burns, Tenn. native shot a total of 7-under during rounds two and three combined.
Â
Spencer Cross gave Tennessee its fourth and final counting round on Tuesday, improving his total of rounds of par or better this season to 11 and remaining in a tie with Lewis for the most rounds of that variety on the team. Cross tied for 28th place, shooting 218 (+2) overall.
Â
Redshirt junior Tyler Johnson tied for 60th place, with a third round score of 74 (+2). Johnson had two birdies and an eagle during round three.
