February 18, 2020 | Track & Field
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Tennessee sophomore jumper Carey McLeod has been selected as the SEC Men's Field Athlete of the Week, the conference office announced Tuesday afternoon.
Â
McLeod recorded the No. 1 mark in the world for the 2019-20 indoor season in the men's long jump last weekend, leaping 8.16m (26-9.25) Friday afternoon at the Tiger Paw Invitational. Less than 24 hours later, the Kingston, Jamaica, native went 16.68 meters (54-8.75) in the triple jump for the No. 2 mark in the NCAA and No. 15 mark in the world this season. McLeod's combined total of 24.84 meters marked the best two-day collegiate indoor performance in the long & triple jump since 2015 (Marquis Dendy, Florida, 25.65m).
Â
With his long jump, McLeod broke Tennessee's 25-year-old school record by 10 centimeters. He now ranks as the No. 25 performer in collegiate track & field history and No. 11 on the all-time SEC indoor performance list, and his jump on Friday was the best by any collegian over the past two seasons.
McLeod's triple jump distance of 16.68m was the best indoor performance by a Vol in 33 years. He now ranks as the No. 3 triple jumper in school history behind Tennessee alumni David Siler (16.85m) and John Tillman (16.76m).
Â
This is the third SEC weekly honor for the Tennessee men this season. Darryl Sullivan and Emmanuel Bynum were respectively honored as Men's Field Athlete of the Week and Freshman of the Week by the conference office on January 21.
