Lady Vols Complete Second Day of IJGA Collegiate Invitational
February 17, 2020 | Women's Golf
GUADALAJARA, Mexico – The University of Tennessee women's golf team is tied for 12th place after the second day at the IJGA Collegiate Invitational after shooting a 296 in the second round.
The team 's current total is 593 (+17) as they started the first nine holes of the third round, recording six-over par so far.
"We did not play well again today," head coach Judi Pavon said. "We are handling the hard holes pretty well, but we are giving shots up to the field on the par-five and the shorter holes because we are not hitting our wedges close."
Sophomore Mikayla Bardwell jumped up eight spots in the leaderboard to tie for 19th after carding a 71 in the second. The Lewisville, Texas, native continued the strong play in her first nine holes of the third as she recorded an eagle on the 12th hole and a birdie on the 18th.
"Mikayla played solid today," Pavon said. "She was much more comfortable than yesterday after getting one competitive round under her belt."
Senior Micheala Williams was the next best performance for the Lady Vols, finishing the second round with 74 strokes and tying for 41st. She started the third round with a birdie in the 10th hole and stayed on par for six others.
Sophomores Malia Stovall and Hadley Walts are tied for 50th overall, carding 150 (+9) over the two and a half rounds. Stovall recorded 75 strokes in the second and recorded one birdie throughout the 18 holes. Walts finished the second round with 78 strokes in the round. The Evansville, Ind., native started the third round with one birdie among the nine holes.
Rounding out the lineup was freshman Nicole Whiston, who shot a 76 in the second and finished with a total 154 (+13) after the first nine holes of the third. After recording no birdies yesterday, the freshman recorded two in the second round.
The Lady Vols close out the IJGA Collegiate Invitational tomorrow morning by finishing the remaining nine holes of the third round. Play is set to begin around 9:15 a.m. ET.
"It is strange to only have nine holes tomorrow," Pavon said. "But we haven't played the front side well, so I would like for us make improvements on the holes that have been causing us issues. With a short turnaround before our next tournament, we need to look at all these warm days as opportunities to work on our games and get better."
