Swim & Dive Central: Opening Weekend
October 28, 2020 | Swimming & Diving
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The Tennessee men's and women's swimming and diving programs open the 2020-21 campaign Thursday and Friday.
The Lady Vols compete against Kentucky's women's team on Thursday, with the Tennessee and Kentucky men's squads getting the action going on Friday.
While the men compete on the road Friday, the Lady Vols return to the Allan Jones Aquatic Center for their second dual in as many days against Vanderbilt.
All three dual meets this week will get underway at 4 p.m. ET.
HOME MEET RESTRICTIONS
Due to COVID-19 restrictions, spectators will be unable to attend meets at the Allan Jones Aquatic Center this fall.
NEW SEASON
In September the Southeastern Conference established new formats for the SEC men's and women's swimming & diving seasons, as the 14 members of the SEC continue to monitor developments related to COVID-19.
All contests will be limited to a dual meet format unless alternative strategies are identified to limit the overall number of participants to ensure appropriate distancing.
Any student-athletes who elect to not participate in intercollegiate athletics during the fall 2020 academic semester because of health and/or safety concerns related to COVID-19 will continue to have their scholarships honored by their university and will reman in good standing with their team.
DEFENDING CHAMPIONS
Thursday will be the first time the Lady Vols hit the water as defending SEC champions. UT will be led by another strong senior class, including 2016 Olympian Tjasa Pintar, seven-time All-American Bailey Grinter and three-time All-American Alexis Yager.
All three swimmers played key roles in the Lady Vols' undefeated 2019-20 season and run to their SEC title.
ON THE HUNT
The men's squad turned in a 7-1 record last season in their eight dual meets, the best record since 2001-02. They finished sixth at the conference championships.
The Vols return several key members of last year's team in Michael Houlie, Kayky Mota, Brett Champlin, and Ethan Sanders. All four swimmers earned All-America honors in 2019-20.
UT also added a deep and talented freshman class that is poised to help build on last season's success.
ON THE BOARDS
The divers are set to continue Tennessee's rich history of success on the boards as All-Americans Grace Cable, Matthew Wade and Will Hallam return for 2020-21.
All three battled with injuries a year ago, but came through with medals at the SEC Championships.
Seniors Keegan Richardson and Ana Celaya Hernandez return for one final tour with both divers looking strong in preseason training.
