Tennessee looks to defend its title this week in Toledo, Ohio after winning by seven strokes a season ago
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee men's golf team heads to Toledo, Ohio to take part in the Inverness Intercollegiate this week.
The field features 15 teams with the Vols entering as one of four Southeastern Conference teams as Auburn, LSU and Missouri join them. The field has three teams who were ranked in the initial GCAA Coaches Poll with an additional three receiving votes in the poll.
Last season, Tennessee ran away with the Inverness Intercollegiate title last season, winning by seven strokes over the field. After the first 36 holes of the competition, the Vols had an 11-stroke lead.
Every player in the lineup placed inside of the top 25 on the individual leaderboard including Hunter Wolcott who tied for fourth in the competition at 3-over-par. Brayden Garrison (+6) and Rhys Nevin (+7) also finished inside of the top 15 to help Tennessee to its second team title of the season.
Those three players anchor the lineup this week with the additions of Spencer Cross, who finished third in the Inverness last season as an individual. Chip Thomas rounds out the lineup, making his second appearance in the lineup in as many tournaments.
The historic Inverness Club has hosted four U.S. Open Championships (1920, 1931, 1957, 1979), two PGA Championships (1986, 1993) and was the 2019 home to the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship. It has hosted this tournament since 2000 with SEC schools winning the tournament title six times.
Tomorrow's first round is scheduled to for a shotgun start at 8:45 a.m. (ET).
The Vols' Lineup
Rhys Nevin
Nevin started his senior season off strong at the Carpet Capital Collegiate, tying for fourth on the individual leaderboard. After an opening round 74 (+2), Nevin recovered with two rounds of par or better to finish the tournament 1-under-par.
Hunter Wolcott
The Burns, Tennessee native finished in the top five in last year's Inverness Intercollegiate as he was the Vols top finisher in the lineup. It was the first of eight top-25 finishes last season for Wolcott as he went on to earn All-SEC honors and GCAA All-Southeast Region honors.
Brayden Garrison
Garrison joined Nevin and Wolcott inside of the top 15 last season at the Inverness Intercollegiate. It was the second of seven top-25 finishes for the Nolensville, Tennessee native last season.
Spencer Cross
After placing in the top 25 last time out at the Carpet Capital Collegiate, Cross returns to Toledo, Ohio where he was the top finisher last season for Tennessee. He placed third on the leaderboard as he was playing as an individual.
Chip Thomas
Thomas is in the lineup for the second tournament of the season. Last time out, Thomas tied for 59th at the Carpet Capital Collegiate as he counted towards the team score in all three rounds.
Vols' Individual
Sean Wilcox
The redshirt junior plays in his second tournament of the season as an individual after tying for 48th at the Carpet Capital Collegiate to open the season.
