August 11, 2019 | Swimming & Diving
LIMA, Peru – Tennessee's swimmers wrapped up a successful 2019 Pan American Games with five medals - two gold, one silver and two bronze. Meanwhile on the coaching side, Director of Swimming and Diving Matt Kredich helped guide Team USA's men's swimming team to 22 medals, nine of them gold.
Tess Cieplucha swam for Team Canada, winning the country its first swimming gold medal at the 2019 Pan American Games with her first place finish in the 400 meter individual medley. The gold was Canada's first in the event since 1999.
Rising senior Meghan Small brought home two medals for Tennessee, a silver and bronze. Small turned in a silver medal winning performance in the women's 200m individual medley. The silver is her third Pan Am Games medal, winning silver in the 200m IM in 2015 and bringing home bronze earlier in the week in the 200m butterfly.
Taylor Abbott kicked things off for the Vols in Lima with a bronze medal winning performance in the 10K Open Water race. The rising senior finished in 1:54:02.7, earning Team USA's first swimming medal of the games.
In her first swim of the Pan Am Games, Small turned for home in the women's 200m butterfly, finding herself in fourth. However, the Lineboro, Md., native raced back in lane one, out-touching Diana Luna Sanchez of Mexico to finish third and win a bronze medal.
Former Lady Vol Molly Hannis swam in one individual event in Lima, the women's 100m breaststroke. The 2016 Olympian finished sixth but returned for Team USA in the 4x100m medley relay. Hannis helped advance the relay team into the A finals where it went on to win gold.
The Vols and Lady Vols begin the 2019-20 season at home on Sept. 20 with the Orange & White Intrasquad meet.
