Vol Track Coaching Legend Chuck Rohe Named to Florida Sports Hall of Fame
July 17, 2019 | Track & Field
ORLANDO, Fla. -- Former Tennessee track & field coaching great Chuck Rohe has been selected to the 2019 class of the Florida Sports Hall of Fame, as announced by the organization in a press conference Wednesday afternoon. The enshrinement is scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 12 at the Amway Center in Orlando, Fla.
Â
At the helm of the UT men's track program from 1963-71, Rohe led the Volunteers to a dominant stretch of 21 consecutive SEC titles across cross country, indoor and outdoor track & field. His Tennessee squads sported an impressive 130-18-2 (.873) dual record over nine seasons and finished top-5 in the NCAA on six occasions. In 1967, Rohe was named the United States Track & Field Coach of the Year.
Â
Rohe also pioneered Tennessee's rich tradition of dual-sport athletes between the track and football programs. Serving as the director of football recruiting under head coach Doug Dickey, Rohe mentored a pair of football All-Americans in Richmond Flowers (1966-69) and Chip Kell (1968-70) in addition to Dick Evey (1961-63) who spent eight seasons in NFL following his collegiate career.
Â
Following his tenure in Knoxville, Rohe spent 20 years as the Executive Director of Florida Citrus Sports, where he led the Citrus Bowl to major status.
Â
Among his many accomplishments was creating a tie-in between the Big 10 and SEC, the expansion of Citrus Bowl Stadium to 70,000 seats, bringing the Florida Classic to Orlando and bringing a second college football bowl game to Florida Citrus Sports. Rohe also brought NFL exhibition games, regular season neutral field college football games and Olympic Soccer to the Citrus Bowl Stadium.
Â
Rohe is no stranger to Hall of Fame recognition. He was inducted into the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Hall of Fame in 2009, the Greater Knoxville Sports Hall of Fame in 2002, the Southern Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame in 2002 and the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame in 1995.
Â
The Tennessee track & field program honors Rohe's legacy each year at the Tennessee Relays with the presentation of the Chuck Rohe Leadership Award - designated for the student-athlete who consistently displays outstanding leadership with integrity, enthusiasm, diligence, academic excellence and a get it done attitude. The most recent recipient of the award was dual-sport standout Maya Neal, an All-American heptathlete and First Team All-SEC soccer player.
