Triple Jumpers Secure All-America Status Saturday Night
June 08, 2019 | Track & Field
AUSTIN, Texas -- Tennessee's triple jump duo of Alonie Sutton and LaChyna Roe each claimed Second Team All-America honors Saturday evening as the Big Orange wrapped up competition at the NCAA National Championships, hosted by the University of Texas at Mike A. Myers Stadium.
Â
Arkansas took home the team national title on the women's side with 64 points, followed by USC (57) and LSU (43) to round out the top three. The Lady Vols came away with one point for the meet as Stamatia Scarvelis placed eighth in the hammer throw.
"This was a tough championship meet for the Vols," said head coach/director of track & field Beth Alford-Sullivan. "We had 16 young people here - 14 that actually competed - and not a lot of breaks went our way. We come away with a record-high of four ninth-place finishes - one spot out of the final, one spot out of [First Team] All-American, one spot from being able to have three extra throws or three extra jumps. It was a tough weekend, and we're disappointed in the outcome - but what we do have is nine of those 16 returning next season. I'm excited about the future."
"Across the board, we're so proud of our senior class. When we recruited them, we told them they would be the foundation of our era, to put down the legs of what we need to build off of. They've done that. When you've got seven of them at the national championships on their last run, it's a pretty cool feeling. I'm very, very proud of that. We continue to grow toward the future, but for today, I will honor and be proud of those seniors and what they've done for us."
Â
LADY VOLS GO 9-10: Sutton and Roe placed 9th and 10th in the triple jump competition, respectively, to become the program's third and fourth All-Americans in the event - joining Vickie Hudson (1992) and Cidae'a Woods (2018).
Â
Sutton (Smiths Station, Ala.) cleared a mark of 13.29m (43-7.25) to break her own all-time freshman record for the third time this outdoor season, while Roe logged a distance of 13.20m (43-3.75) to earn outdoor All-America acclaim for the first time in her career. The senior captain from Richmond, Va. ends her collegiate career as the program's all-time record holder in the indoor and outdoor triple jump with leaps of 13.54m and 13.61m, respectively.
Â
SCARVELIS CLOSES CAREER: Making her outdoor nationals discus debut, Scarvelis came away with a 17th-place finish on her throw of 52.78m (173-2) - missing Second Team status by less than three feet. The senior captain from Santa Barbara, Calif. ends her Tennessee career as a three-time SEC Champion, three-time school record holder (indoor shot put, hammer throw, weight throw), six-time All-American and six-time All-SEC performer.
Â
UP NEXT: This marks the end of Tennessee's 2019 outdoor season. The Vols will have a handful of athletes competing in international competition this summer, notably later this month at the U.S. Junior and Senior Championships.
