MIRAMAR, Fla. -- The Tennessee track & field program will have a pair of current and future student-athletes competing this weekend at the USATF U-20 Outdoor Championships, hosted by the Ansin Sports Complex in Miramar, Fla. Rising sophomores Andrew Ference and Katie Thronson will be in action alongside incoming signees Vanessa Watson and Britton Wilson.
The top-two finishers in each event this weekend will move on to represent Team USA at the 2019 U-20 Pan-American Games next month (July 18-21) in San Jose, Costa Rica.
ENTRIES: The Big Orange will be represented across four events this weekend, led by Thronson who is entered in both the women's 3,000m and 1,500m finals. The Spokane, Wash. native posted Tennessee's fastest times in both events during the 2018-19 season, clocking marks of 9:46.37 and 4:25.79 respectively.
Ference (Tuscon, Ariz.) will make his U.S. juniors debut in the men's pole vault, qualifying for the meet with his lifetime-best clearance at the SEC Outdoor Championships. He towered over 5.25m (17-2.75) for eighth place to score a point for the Big Orange.
Wilson and Watson will both compete in the 400m hurdles after placing first (56.77) and third (59.12), respectively, in the event last week at the 2019 New Balance National Championships. Capturing a handful of state champions and state records during her senior season, Wilson was recently named the 2018-19 Gatorade Player of the Year in Virginia.
