Tennessee tied for the sixth after two round of play at the NCAA Regionals
OPELIKA, Ala. – The University of Tennessee women's golf team remains in top-6 position after two rounds of the NCAA Regionals.
The Lady Vols are tied for sixth, the final spot to advance to the NCAA Championships. They are tied with No. 13 Auburn at 589 (+13) through 36 holes of play.
UT remains two strokes above the cutline as Maryland sits at 15-over-par for the tournament. Tennessee sits ahead of six top-50 teams on the leaderboard including No. 22 Furman (+17). Six teams will advance out of the four NCAA Regionals to make up the 24-team NCAA Championships field.
Sophomore Mariah Smith remains in contention for the individual title as she enters the final round tied for fifth on the leaderboard. Smith carded a team-low 72 (E) and is one of just eight players in the field to shoot par or better in the first two rounds.
Smith, who is 1-under-par for the tournament, is just three strokes off the lead behind Maryland's Virunpat Olankitkunchai and Vanderbilt's Auston Kim.
Sophomore Waverly Whiston tied Smith for the low round of the day with a 72 (E) that included four birdies. Back-to-back birdies on the par-4 11th and the par-4 12th brought her round back to even par. From there, she parred out the rest of the round.
Junior Micheala Williams is in line for her seventh consecutive top-25 finish, entering the final round. Williams is tied for 18th on the individual leaderboard at 2-over-par for the tournament.
Tennessee will tee off the final round tomorrow at 9:00 a.m. ET off hole No. 1. The Lady Vols will be paired with Maryland (+15) and Furman (+17) who are in 8th and 9th, respectively.
Coach's Take
On the players' course management today:
"We only had one double on the card today. This week is just so important and every shot counts. We know we have to play smart and make good decisions. Maybe they have been more conservative at times than in other weeks." – Coach Judi Pavon
On having the experience of being on the cutline entering the final round from the SEC Championships:
"I think they will draw on that experience and will know that they all need to stay in their game all 18 holes. We've had a couple play well for nine holes the last two days, but we need everyone to grind it out all 18 holes tomorrow." – Coach Judi Pavon
