JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Seven Tennessee athletes and one relay squad qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field National Championships on Saturday as the Big Orange completed competition at the NCAA East Preliminary Rounds inside the University of North Florida's Hodges Stadium.
Â
The Vols and Lady Vols will be well represented with 14 student-athletes competing in 11 events at nationals, which will be held June 5-8 in Austin, Texas. To qualify for the championships, an athlete must have finished top-12 in their respective event at the regional meet.
Â
BIG JOE HEADED TO TEXAS: Tennessee sophomore Joseph Maxwell opened Saturday for UT in the men's shot put, punching his first ticket to nationals with a 5th-place finish in the event. The Evansville, Ontario, Canada native heaved a mark of 19.25m (63-2) for the third-best throw of his career.
Â
TRIPLE JUMP DUO BOUND FOR AUSTIN: The Lady Vol tandem of Alonie Sutton (Smiths Station, Ala.) and LaChyna Roe (Richmond, Va.) secured their spots in the women's triple jump on Saturday, placing 9th and 10th respectively among the regional competitors. Sutton cleared a mark of 13.16m (43-2.25) while Roe followed with a 13.06m (42-10.25) performance as the freshman-senior duo both clinched their first-career outdoor national appearances.
Â
Tennessee and Florida were the only programs with multiple women's triple jump qualifiers in the East region with two apiece.
Â
HURDLING TO THE LONE STAR STATE: Two Lady Vols claimed national championship berths in the women's 100m hurdles, as Alexis Duncan (DeSoto, Texas) and Domonique Turner (Lakeland, Fla.) each punched their tickets Saturday evening.
Â
Duncan clocked in at 12.95 for the fifth-best time on the day, placing second in her heat to automatically advance to Austin. Turner posted a personal-best time of 13.20 that finished third in her heat and moved her up to No. 5 on Tennessee's all-time top-10 list.
Â
UT was one of two schools in the region to have multiple national qualifiers in the 100m hurdles, as LSU led the East with three athletes moving on to Texas.
Â
OH, HE FAST: Senior captain Mustaqeem Williams punched his second ticket of the weekend in the men's 200m dash, automatically qualifying for nationals with a second-place finish in his heat. The Woodbridge, Va. native turned in a time of 20.40 that ranked seventh among the regional field.
Â
This marks the second-straight season that Williams has qualified for nationals in both the 100m and 200m dashes. Last year at Eugene, Oregon, he placed 20th and 6th in those events respectively.
Â
LONG THREE-PEATS: Zach Long will make his third-straight outdoor national championship appearance in the men's 5000m after qualifying on Saturday night. The senior from Rutledge, Tenn. placed fourth in his heat with a modest time of 14:15.65 to automatically advance to Austin.
Â
LADY VOLS CAP OFF SUCCESSFUL NIGHT: The Tennessee women's 4x400m relay squad of Layla White, Brooklynn Broadwater, Martina Weil and Lenysse Dyer combined for a time of 3:30.17, placing second in their heat and third overall at regionals to easily qualify for the national championships. The mark ranks 10th in Lady Vol history and was the fastest for UT this season by more than two seconds.
