Historic Triple Jumps Highlight Saturday For Vol Track
April 27, 2019 | Track & Field
GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Triple jumpers Alonie Sutton and Jalen Tate put together historic performances for the Tennessee track & field program as the Vols competed at the University of Florida's Tom Jones Memorial Invitational Saturday afternoon. Sutton broke the all-time Lady Vol freshman record in the event, while Tate posted the furthest mark by a Vol in 34 years.
Â
Sutton (Smiths Station, Ala.) set the UT freshman standard for the third time this season, clearing a distance of 13.28m (43-7) at Florida to place third at the meet. Her mark currently ranks 19th among NCAA Division I athletes and third among the nation's female freshman class.
Â
Tate (Clarksville, Tenn.) improved his personal record by nine centimeters with a triple jump of 16.18m (53-1), finishing fourth at the meet and first among college athletes. His performance leads the SEC in 2019 and ranks top-10 in the NCAA, in addition to being the first mark above 53 feet by a Tennessee Vol since program-record holder John Tillman leaped 16.94m (55-7) in 1985.
Â
HURDLERS IMPRESS IN GATOR COUNTRY: Tennessee's 100m hurdle duo of Alexis Duncan and Domonique Turner opened competition for the Big Orange on Saturday, each posting season-best wind-legal marks of 13.27 and 13.53, respectively, to advance past prelims.
Â
Duncan (DeSoto, Texas) went on to finish second in the meet finals with a wind-aided 12.92, topping all other collegiate competitors in the field by at least 0.23 seconds. Turner (Lakeland, Fla.) clocked in at 13.27 for sixth place in the final, however an illegal tailwind invalidated what would have been a hundredth-second personal record for the Lady Vol junior.
Â
UPDATE FROM PENN RELAYS: The Vols wrapped up the 125th running of the historic Penn Relays with a pair of running events on Saturday. Senior captain Zach Long turned in a college-best time of 4:05.38 in the Olympic development men's mile to finish as the top collegian in the field. In the college division men's 4x800m relay, Nick Boogades, Alex Crigger, Joe Hoots and Long teamed up to place fourth with a collective time of 7:44.63.
Â
LONG-SPRINT ROOKIES PROGRESS: Tennessee freshmen Jonathan Sacoor and Nickson Pierre each turned in season-best performances for the Big Orange in the men's 400m dash at Florida. Reigning U-20 World Champion Sacoor tabbed a mark of 46.43 for 9th place at the meet, followed by Nashville native Pierre who finished in 48.32 for 25th place.
Â
WILLIAMS WRAPS IT UP: In UT's final event of the day at Florida, senior captain Mustaqeem Williams clocked a 10.22 in the 100m dash for Tennessee's fastest time of the season. The mark was wind-aided but currently stands as the No. 2 time on the 2019 SEC Outdoor Performance List.
Â
UP NEXT: Tennessee will conclude its regular season competition with a one-day home meet on Saturday, May 4. The Tennessee Challenge is set to run from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Tom Black Track at LaPorte Stadium, and admission is free. Postseason action begins with the SEC Championships, hosted by the University of Arkansas Thursday through Saturday, May 9-11.
