Kathryn Cosgrove Awarded NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship
April 16, 2019 | Rowing
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Tennessee senior Kathryn Cosgrove has been selected for the NCAA Women's Enhancement Postgraduate Scholarship, a $10,000 award given to just 13 female college graduates across all NCAA institutions.Â
A four-time member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll and a recipient of the Service Medallion for 350+ Community Service Hours, Cosgrove is set to graduate Magna Cum Laude in May with a GPA of 3.65 and a degree in therapeutic recreation and sports management. Now medically exempt from competition, she rowed for two seasons for Tennessee and was named to the All-Big 12 Rowing Team in 2017.
Cosgrove has accepted a position with UPS as an inside sales representative in their training program in San Antonio, Texas, but plans to continue working toward her goal of becoming an occupational therapist. Â
"Luckily, one of the schools I got into was St. Augustine in Austin, Texas, and they have multiple flexible programs that offer classes on just the weekends, part time, or full time," said Cosgrove. "My start date for St. Augustine can be August 2019, January 2020, or May 2020. I am fortunate enough to have options and am very excited to have gotten into graduate school and received job offers, so now I'm just deciding how to go about it."
Her ultimate career goal is to become an occupational therapist working with individuals with disabilities in an adaptive sport setting.
"This scholarship will be a huge stepping stone in my pursuit of becoming an occupational therapist. I am fortunate to begin working for a company like UPS that inspires their employees to continually push for personal development and success," said Cosgrove. "The University of Tennessee has given me an amazing platform to begin my long-term goals, and I will be forever grateful to this school, the SEC, and the NCAA for continuing to help me get there."
The NCAA awards just 13 Women's Enhancement Postgraduate Scholarships every year, and this marks the fifth straight year a Tennessee rower has been a recipient. Past recipients are Jennifer Davis (2018), Chandler Frumin (2017), Harper Lucas (2016) and Sarah McAuliffe (2015).
"If we truly value diversity, then we have to not only hire diverse employees, we have to also work hard to supply a diverse set of qualified graduates to the workforce," said Dr. Donald Bruce, UT Faculty Athletics Representative. "This tremendous honor is a testament to the great work our rowing program does every day to prepare young women to play a larger role in athletics. Five winners in five straight years from the same school and the same sport is unprecedented. My congratulations to Kathryn and our entire rowing program on this outstanding achievement, and to our athletics department for prioritizing the development of our female student-athletes."Â
