Hammer Vols Go 1-2 Thursday at 52nd Tennessee Relays

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Tennessee's throwing tandem of Georgios Korakidis and Seth Whitener went 1-2 in the men's hammer throw to highlight Thursday's performances for the home squad at the 52nd Tennessee Relays.

Korakidis, a sophomore from Kilkis, Greece who holds the UT program record in the event, earned his first individual win of the 2019 outdoor season with a heave of 67.97m (223-0). Whitener, a senior captain out of Dallas, Ga., took a runner-up finish with his mark of 65.72m (215-7).

RHODES' CAREER DAY: Tennessee sophomore Kiara Rhodes set personal records in three events Thursday as part of the women's heptathlon, rounding out the afternoon with a personal-best Day One total of 3,269 points - currently positioned fourth out of 17 competitors (third among collegians).

Rhodes (Memphis, Tenn.) opened the meet with a first-place finish in the heptathlon 100m hurdles, clocking a lifetime-best mark of 13.74 to earn 1,015 points. In the next event, she recorded her second PR of the day with a clearance of 1.68m (5-6) in the high jump for 830 points.

After a 9.27m (30-5) performance in the shot put, Rhodes closed the day with a PR of 24.41 seconds in the 200m dash, placing third among heptathletes and collecting 942 points. She will conclude the heptathlon Friday with the long jump, javelin throw and 800-meter run, beginning at 3:00 p.m. at Tom Black Track.

LAST ONE, BEST ONE FOR HASSLER: Junior javelin specialist Nick Hassler saw action for the second time this season, recording a distance of 55.11m (180-9) on his third and final attempt Thursday evening. The mark placed 16th at the event.
