Vol Throwers Tab Four Podium Finishes Friday at Trailblazer Challenge

CORAL GABLES, Fla. -- The Tennessee throws squad totaled four podium finishes to highlight Friday's performances at the Power 5 Trailblazer Challenge. Stamatia Scarvelis, Joseph Maxwell, Nick Hassler and Jake Sheehan each logged top-three results for the Big Orange in their respective events.

In addition to serving as the start of the outdoor schedule, the Trailblazer Challenge brings together five combined track and field programs that are led by female head coaches: Tennessee (Beth Alford-Sullivan), Miami (Amy Deem), Ohio State (Karen Dennis), Ole Miss (Connie Price-Smith), and Southern California (Caryl Smith Gilbert).

SHOT PUT MEDALS: Scarvelis heaved an NCAA-leading mark of 16.96m (55-7.75) on her third attempt to claim gold in the women's shot put. Topping every competitor in the field by nearly four feet, it was the second-career outdoor shot put victory for the senior from Santa Barbara, Calif.

On the men's side, Maxwell earned a runner-up finish with a lifetime-best of 19.21m (63-0.25) in the shot put. It was the first time Maxwell had surpassed 19 meters in his career, entering the meet with a previous-best 18.96m from the 2019 indoor season.

UT LEADS THROUGH TWO: The Vols scored 14 points in the men's javelin behind second- and third-place finishes from Hassler (57.65m / 189-2) and Sheehan (57.29m / 187-11). Through two events, Tennessee leads the Trailblazer Challenge men's standings with 22 points.
