WTEN CENTRAL: Lady Vols vs. Old Dominion / Presbyterian
February 09, 2019 | Women's Tennis
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The 24th-ranked Tennessee women's tennis team returns to action on Sunday with a doubleheader against Old Dominion and Presbyterian at Goodfriend Tennis Center.
Â
The Lady Vols' match against Old Dominion (6-1) gets underway at 11 a.m., while the match against Presbyterian (6-1) is scheduled to start at 4 p.m. The start time of the match against Presbyterian is subject to change, depending on the length of the first match.
Â
The two matches are the beginning of an 11-match homestand for the Lady Vols.
Â
Following its performance at the ITA Kick-Off Tallahassee Regional, Tennessee (3-1) made its season debut in the ITA's national team rankings last week at No. 24. The No. 24 ranking is Tennessee's first top 25 ranking since February 2018.
Â
In addition to Tennessee's ranking as a team, Sadie Hammond and Kaitlin Staines moved up as a doubles team to the No. 17 spot. Hammond and Staines' No. 17 ranking is the highest by a Tennessee doubles team since Caitlyn Williams and Joanna Henderson were ranked No. 16 in the 2014-15 preseason poll.
Â
The duo is an undefeated 10-0 together, dating back to the fall season.
Â
As a team, Old Dominion has notched some notable wins early in the season. The Monarchs have knocked off the likes of Temple, Nebraska and Missouri so far this spring, building on last season's 19-5 finish. ODU's only loss this season came at the hands of fourth-ranked Duke during ITA Kick-Off Weekend.
Â
Presbyterian has also gotten off to a hot start this season, winning six straight matches after dropping the season-opener to Clemson. The Blue Hose finished 12-9 last season.
Â
Admission is free for all matches this season, and parking is available in Lot N-12, which is located at the corner of Lake Avenue and Volunteer Boulevard. For the most up-to-date information about the Tennessee women's tennis program, follow @Vol_WTennis on Twitter.
Â
ABOUT THE SERIES: The Lady Vols hold a 5-0 all-time record against Old Dominion, including last season's 4-3 win over the Monarchs in Norfolk, Va. Prior to that meeting, Tennessee and Old Dominion had not met since 2002.
Â
Sunday's matchup with Presbyterian is Tennessee's first ever meeting with the Blue Hose.
Â
UP NEXT: Tennessee hosts Indiana for a midday match on Friday at 11:30 a.m. Then, on Sunday, the Lady Vols complete the weekend against South Florida at 12 p.m.
