VFL John Richardson Named to Missouri Sports Hall of Fame

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- A three-time NCAA All-American and member of Tennessee's 1991 national champion outdoor track & field team, John Richardson was named to the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame class of 2020 in a press release from the organization last week. The javelin specialist from Miller, Missouri will be enshrined Saturday, January 26 at the University Plaza Hotel & Convention Center in Springfield.

Richardson totaled three All-America and four All-SEC honors for his career on Rocky Top and helped the Vols secure national and conference team titles during his senior season in 1991. In his final collegiate competition, Richardson threw the javelin 72 meters (236-3) to earn a second-place finish and score eight points for Tennessee at the 1991 NCAA Outdoor Championships. UT went on to defeat Washington State 51-42 for the program's second NCAA men's title.

Prior to the 1991 season, Richardson picked up back-to-back All-America certificates in the javelin with a pair of sixth-place NCAA finishes in 1989 and 1990. He also notably broke the Tennessee school record on three occasions, logging his best performance at the 1990 Dogwood Relays at Tom Black Track with a throw of 77.52m (254-4).

Richardson was a dual sport standout for Miller High School track and basketball. Rated as the No. 1 high school javelin thrower by Track & Field News his senior year, he also won Missouri state championships for Miller in the long jump, high jump, shot put and discus throw. Richardson additionally led his high school's basketball team to a 24-3 overall record and conference title that season.

Richardson currently serves as Vice President of Sales for Ozarks Coca-Cola/Dr. Pepper Bottling Company. Miller High School retired his track and field jersey in 2014.
