November 21, 2019 | Women's Golf
She is just one of four freshmen to make the list and holds a Lady Vol best 70.93 stroke average
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Tennessee women's golfer Nicole Whiston was ranked in the latest edition on the Arnold Palmer Cup Rankings, as announced by the Golf Coaches Association of America on Thursday.
She was ranked as the No. 24 golfer in the United States and was one of just four freshmen to make the list.
Using Golfstat's NCAA Player Ranking as a base, the Arnold Palmer Cup Ranking awards bonus points for wins and high finishes and a penalty for poor finishes. The ranking also contains a strength of schedule component.
The top six players in the United States rankings and the top six players in the International rankings automatically qualify for the event with five additional players for each team being chosen by the committee. The final spot will be a coaches' pick.
So far this season, Whiston has been the top player on the leaderboard in each event for the Lady Vols with three top-10 and five top-25 finishes. She has a team-best stroke average of 70.93, which is on pace to break the single-season school record by more than a stroke.
Through five events of play this season, Whiston has counted towards the team score in all 15 rounds with 11 of those rounds being par or better. She also has a team-best four rounds in the 60's with three of those coming in the final round of competition.
Her third round stroke average of 69.40 is two strokes better than any other player on the team. She has been below par in every final round this season.
The next Arnold Palmer Cup Ranking will be announced February 20. The tournament, consisting of only collegiate golfers, is set to be played at Lahinch Golf Club in Lahinch, Ireland from July 3-5, 2020.
