Abbott Named SEC Swimmer of the Week
November 12, 2019 | Swimming & Diving
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The conference office announced Tuesday that Tennessee's Taylor Abbott has been named the SEC Male Swimmer of the Week following his five-win performance over the weekend.
Abbott won three events in Friday's meet against Purdue and followed up with two more victories Saturday over Georgia Tech.
The senior swam the 1650 against Georgia Tech, setting an NCAA B-cut with his time of 15:01.36, which ranks fifth nationally. The extracted 1000 freestyle from that swim was 9:04.95, the eighth-fastest 1000 free this season.
He took first place in the 200 fly (1:50.70), 1000 free (9:05.67) and 500 free (4:26.32) in UT's win over Purdue before adding the 1650 and another 500 free (4:29.55) victory on Saturday against Georgia Tech.
"Taylor is swimming with lots of confidence right now and has moved into a wonderful leadership role, especially with the younger guys in the distance group," associate head coach Lance Asti said. "He has had a great fall and his mile on Saturday shows he is on a great path. This award is well deserved."
This is the fourth time this season Tennessee has had a swimmer of the week as Abbott joins Meghan Small, Erika Brown and Alec Connolly in winning the honor. UT has had an athlete win the award three of the last four weeks.
