January 31, 2019 | Track & Field
COLUMBIA, S.C. -- Tennessee sophomore Kiara Rhodes picked up the first multi-event win of her collegiate career Thursday afternoon at the Carolina Indoor Track & Field Facility, taking first place in the women's pentathlon with a personal-best 3,762 points.
A Memphis, Tenn. native, Rhodes led the Carolina Challenge pentathlon wire-to-wire and set three personal records on the afternoon. Her mark of 3,762 points ranks sixth on Tennessee's all-time top-10 list. The score also went down as a facility record, as it is the first time South Carolina has hosted a pentathlon inside its new facility.
Rhodes began the day with back-to-back first-place finishes in the 60m hurdles and high jump. Her time of 8.58 in the hurdles earned 1,000 points, while her high jump clearance of 1.67m (5-5.75) tied a PR and was good for 818 points.
The Tennessee sophomore tacked on 511 points in the shot put with a hurl of 9.72m (31-10.75) before posting back-to-back PRs to close out the competition. In the long jump, Rhodes' lifetime-best distance of 5.77m (18-11.25) tallied 780 points, while her time of 2:33.21 in the 800m earned 653 points for a grand total of 3,762.
The Vols continue action at the Carolina Challenge Friday morning, beginning at 11 a.m. with the women's 60m dash. For the most up-to-date information on Tennessee track & field, follow @Vol_Track on Twitter.
