2018-19 Cheer Team Announced
July 13, 2018 | Cheer, Dance & Mascots
July 13, 2018 - KNOXVILLE, Tenn. --Â Before 102,455 fans in Neyland Stadium see them run through the T, tumble and flip through the end zones, or build pyramids to entertain the crowd during time outs, Tennessee's Cheer Team holds tryouts to fill its roster for the coming year.
Today, 16 females and 15 males were announced as those who completed the tryout process and will be members of the 2018-19 Tennessee Cheer Team. Of the 31 cheerleaders on the team, seven freshmen and one sophomore transfer will suit up this fall as first year members of the team. They will join 11 returning sophomores, six juniors, and six seniors when practice begins next week.
Tryouts were held in late April where a final cut was made pending successful completion of spring classes and the submission of reference letters. Having reviewed all of these documents and evaluations from tryouts, tryout staff and evaluators recommended all 31 students be finalized as members of the team.
Senior Associate Athletic Director Janeen Lalik announced the team selection in an email earlier today to those selected for the squad.
"After consulting with evaluators from tryouts and UT Spirit Staff recommendations, we are excited to announce that you have been officially selected to be a member of the 2018/19 University of Tennessee Cheer Team, and no further evaluation is necessary," Lalik wrote. "We look forward to getting started with you as an official member of the team as we begin fall preparation next week at practice and camp."
The team will begin practice next week before traveling to East Tennessee State University for the Universal Cheer Association College Spirit Camp, where they will compete against cheer teams from around the nation.
