VFL Christin Stewart Homers Way into Detroit Tigers History Books
September 21, 2018 | Baseball
DETROIT – Tigers rookie and Vol for Life Christin Stewart homered his way into the history books on Thursday night. Stewart previewed what was to come during batting practice, crushing a ball onto the Pepsi Porch, a rare second-deck shot at Comerica Park.
In the first inning of Detroit's series opener versus Kansas City, Stewart took advantage of a hung 1-1 changeup by Royals starter Jorge Lopez. He sent the ball flying over the right-field fence with a runner on for his first Major League long ball.
In his second at-bat, the outfielder belted a hanging slider thrown by Lopez a dozen rows deep into the right-field seats for a three-run homer and a Detroit lead.
Stewart then came within inches of a bases-clearing double in the seventh on a 3-2 count, but the ball sliced just foul. He drew a bases-loaded walk on the next pitch, capping the night with six RBIs.
An Atlanta native, Stewart's six RBIs marked a career high since being selected in the compensation round of the 2015 Draft. Previously, his most in a game was five which he collected on Aug. 13, 2015, for Class A West Michigan during his first summer as a pro.
Ranked as Detroit's No. 6 prospect per MLB Pipeline, Stewart is the first Tigers player since 1908 to post a six-RBI game within his first 11 Major League contests. The last Detroit rookie with a six-RBI game was Ryan Raburn, who drove in seven on July 25, 2007.
With the performance, Stewart also became the first Detroit player to hit his first two career home runs in the same game since Brent Clevlen on Aug. 1, 2006.
Stewart, who hit 93 homers over four seasons in the Minors, now has a solid .805 OPS and seven RBIs through his first 11 games in the big leagues.
A beneficiary of the expanded rosters in September, Stewart has become the starting left fielder for the Tigers and looks to earn a roster spot for the full 2019 season.
