Swimming & Diving Announces 2018-19 Team Captains
September 17, 2018 | Swimming & Diving
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The Tennessee swimming and diving program announced its four senior team captains for the 2018-19 season.
Butterflyer/Freestyler Madeline Banic (Midlothian, Va.) and diver Rachel Rubadue (Columbus, Ohio) were chosen to represent the women's team. Breaststroker Matthew Dunphy (Belvidere, Tenn.) and backstroker/freestyler Joey Reilman (Medina, Ohio) will serve as captains from the men's squad.
"When an athlete is named captain of any team at Tennessee, it is a tremendous honor and responsibility," Tennessee head coach Matt Kredich said. "On the swimming and diving team, the position is held by someone who has developed a number of qualities to a very high level. We modeled our definition of captain after Sam Walker's 'The Captain's Class' book about the most effective captains in history. These qualities heavily influence the competitive personality of the team, and include humility, powerful communication abilities, a servant's mindset, and relentlessness competitiveness.
"The captains that we've chosen each has a unique blend of qualities that inspire the team and make everyone around them better."
Tennessee opens the swimming and diving season Sept. 28 with the annual Orange & White Intrasquad Meet at 3:30 p.m. at Allan Jones Aquatic Center. Last season, the Lady Vols were third at the SEC championships and seventh at the NCAA meet. The Tennessee men placed fourth at SECs and 11th at NCAAs.
Madeline Banic (Midlothian, Va.)
Maddy Banic enters her senior season as an eight-time All-American and six-time SEC champion, including a conference title in the 50-yard freestyle as a sophomore. The butterflyer and freestyler is also a two-time member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll.
Kredich: "Maddy's competitive fire, humility and love for this team have made her a charismatic leader and an inspirational figure for the Lady Vol swimming and diving team. She has overcome some incredibly difficult challenges at Tennessee, and through that has developed the confidence and wisdom to help this team do things that we've never accomplished before."
Rachel Rubadue (Columbus, Ohio)
A representative of the diving squad, Rachel Rubadue is a two-time All-American and five-time SEC medalist. Rubadue has excelled throughout her career in platform diving, where medaled three times (gold - 2016, silver - 2017, 2018).
Kredich: "One of the characteristics we're looking for in a leader is ironclad emotional control. Rachel has won an SEC championship by displaying incredible emotional control under pressure. She is unshakable and our team feeds off of her competitiveness."
Diving Coach Dave Parrington: "I am very pleased with the naming of Rachel Rubadue as one of our women's swimming and diving team captain's alongside Maddy Banic. Rachel's pride and passion for the University of Tennessee and her team is on display every day in practice and is especially exemplified in her competitive spirit and drive each and every time she proudly competes while giving her all for the Lady Vols. She has earned the respect of her teammates and coaches alike with consistent dedication and successful competitiveness which serves as an excellent example for her team."
Matthew Dunphy (Belvidere, Tenn.)
Matthew Dunphy has continually developed his swimming during his time at Tennessee, qualifying for the NCAA championships for the first time in the 100 and 200 breaststroke last season. He is a three-time member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll and a two-time part of the SEC Community Service Team.
Kredich: "Matthew is already one of the great stories in the history of Tennessee Swimming. He has an unrelenting desire to improve, and the standards he's set for himself are exemplary. Matthew's enthusiasm burns white hot every day, and he makes everyone around him want to be better."
Joey Reilman (Medina, Ohio)
Joey Reilman enters his final season as a four-time All-American in the pool as well as a three-time CSCAA Scholar All-American. The backstroker and freestyler qualified individually for the NCAA championships for the first time as a junior last season.
Kredich: "Joey has been an exemplary student athlete from the day he stepped onto the campus at Tennessee. He is remarkably humble, emotionally rock steady, relentlessly competitive, and his emotional intelligence allows him to connect with everyone on the team. His desire to serve his team comes through every single day in practice."
