Johnson and Thomas to join Vols as transfers

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – University of Tennessee men's golf coach Brennan Webb announced the addition of transfers Tyler Johnson and Chip Thomas, Wednesday.
The two Knoxville area natives join the 2018 recruiting class as a total of six new players will join the Vols for the upcoming season.
Johnson, who just completed his redshirt freshman season, and Thomas, who just completed his sophomore season, played key roles in helping Middle Tennessee State advance to the NCAA Regionals in 2018 as they both played in all 12 events for the Blue Raiders.

•   Named the C-USA Freshman of the Year
•   Voted as a Second Team All-C-USA member as well as earning All-Freshman Team honors
•   Finished second on the team in stroke average with a 72.1 in 35 rounds of play
•   Compiled four top 10 finishes while placing in the top 25 eight times in 12 competitions
•   Top finish of the season came at the Memphis Intercollegiate when he tied for third with a three day total of 213 (-3)
•   Carded a season low score of 9-under-par at the Quail Valley Collegiate Invitational which included a season-low round of 67 in the final round
•   Tied for 16th in the NCAA Regionals with a score of 209 (-4) while also tying his season-low round of 67 in round three
•   Earned all-state and all-region honors as a junior and senior at Farragut High School
•   Individual regional medalist in 2015 and 2016 at Farragut

•   Competed in all 24 events in his freshman and sophomore campaigns compiling a stroke average of 73.0
•   Took co-medalist honors this season at the MTSU Intercollegiate with rounds of 71-69
•   Finished third on the team in stroke average with a 72.4 in 35 rounds of play
•   Placed inside of the top 25 six times this season including top 10 finish at the Bearcat InvitationalÂ
•   Carded a career-low round of 66 in round three of the Quail Valley Collegiate
•   Voted to the C-USA All-Freshman Team in 2017 while also earning C-USA Golfer of the Week honors twice that season
•   Helped the team to an NCAA tournament berth, tying for 17th at the NCAA Regional in College Grove

"We are incredibly fortunate to be able to add two players of the level of Tyler and Chip," coach Webb said. "They will be a tremendous asset to our program on and off the golf course. I know they are excited to return home to Knoxville and continue their college careers as Vols."
