July 31, 2018 | Track & Field
LARISSA, Greece — Tennessee rising sophomore thrower Georgios Korakidis will return to campus in August as a school record holder.Â
Korakidis finished second in the hammer throw at the U23 Greece Championships with a mark of 68.70 meters (225-4), surpassing teammate Seth Whitener's previous program record of 68.59m (225-0) set in 2017.
In his first year with the Vols, Korakidis set the freshman records in both the indoor weight throw (20.17m) and hammer (67.09m). The native of KilkÃs, Greece, took seventh in hammer at the SEC championships and qualified for the NCAA East Preliminary Championships, placing 16th.Â
The Vols have now set five program records in throwing events in 2018, two on the men's side and three for the women.Â
In addition to Korakidis' new hammer record, fellow newcomer Jordan West set the school mark in the shot put, taking third at the SEC championships with a mark of 19.79m (64-11.25). He was 12th in the event at the NCAA championships.Â
Rising senior Stamatia Scarvelis set three school records for the women's team this season (indoor shot put and weight throw; outdoor hammer). She took third at the NCAA outdoor championship in the hammer.Â
