T&F Summer Update: International Gold

Past and present members of the Tennessee track and field program competed in Europe last week, taking home two gold medals on the international stage.Â
Nathan Strother, who graduated in May, was part of a the winning U.S. 4x400-meter relay team to conclude the inaugural Athletics World Cup in London. Coming back from injury, pro Vol Christian Coleman won his first career Diamond League gold in Morocco.Â
Rising sophomore Jordan West earned some key international experience, taking sixth in the shot put at the IAAF World U20 Championships in Finland.
WEST WRAPS SEASON
Jordan West's freshman season season is officially in the books following his sixth-place finish in the shot put at the IAAF World U20 Championships on Tuesday. After advancing through the morning preliminaries, West recorded a mark of 19.86 meters (65-2) in the finals.Â
West wrapped up a standout first collegiate season for the Vols last month. He earned second-team All-America honors with a 12th-place finish at the NCAA championships and also took third at the SEC championships in May. He broke Tennessee's longstanding school record with a throw of 19.79m (64-11.25) at the conference meet.Â
He qualified for the world championships by placing second at the USATF Junior Outdoor Championships.Â
COLEMAN WINS FIRST DIAMOND LEAGUE TITLE
Coming back from a hamstring injury, Christian Coleman earned his first career victory in the IAAF Diamond League on Friday. He narrowly edged Ronnie Back to win the 100m in 9.98 seconds to take gold in Rabat Morocco.
He had not competed since May, so the Rabat stopped signaled a new start to the season for Coleman, who set the 60m indoor world record earlier this year (6.34 seconds)Â
STROTHER TAKES RELAY GOLD
Recent graduate Nathan Strother made the most of his first time on a national team, taking relay gold while also helping the United States win the first Athletics World Cup in London.Â
Strother led off the 4x400m relay to close the meet, racing around the track with a split time of 43.86 seconds. The U.S. squad won in 2:59.78, ahead of Poland's silver medal time of 3:02.80.Â
The meet featured eight nations: China, France, Germany, Great Britain, Jamaica, Poland, South Africa and the United States.Â
