Nolan Ray Qualifies For U.S. Amateur

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- University of Tennessee rising redshirt junior golfer Nolan Ray has qualified for the 2018 U.S. Amateur on Aug. 13-19 in Pebble Beach, Calif.
The event will be played at Pebble Beach Golf Links and Spyglass Hill Golf Course. FS1 will televise on Aug. 15-17, while FOX will broadcast action on Aug. 18-19.
Ray fired rounds of 65 and 70 for a 5-under 135 at Willow Creek Golf Club in Knoxville on Tuesday to forge a three-way tie for second. The Brentwood, Tenn., native prevailed in a three-hole playoff for the second qualifying U.S. Amateur spot from this site, holding off UT rising sophomore Chase Roswall (68-67--135) and Chandler Eaton (67-68--135). Benjamin Shipp took first at 8-under (64-68--132). Roswall and Eaton are on the list of alternates for Pebble Beach.
Others with UT ties competing at Willow Creek were rising sophomore Spencer Cross (67-70--137), true freshman Jet Tickle (70-71--141) and alum Jack Smith (70-71--141).
Pebble Beach Golf Links will be hosting its 12th USGA championship, having hosted four previous U.S. Amateurs, the last in 1999. Spyglass Hill Golf Course was also the stroke-play co-host for the 1999 U.S. Amateur.
