Heron Wins Back-to-Back National Open Water 5K Titles

TEMPE, Ariz. — Tennessee senior David Heron defended his 5-kilometer title this weekend at the USA Swimming Open Water National Championships at Tempe Town Lake.
Heron, who completed his Vol career this spring, won the men's 5K race in a time of 54 minutes, 29.921 seconds, a second ahead of Canada's Eric Hedlin.
"My plan was to draft as much as possible the first two laps, take it easy and then that last lap see if I could get ahead of everyone toward the end," Heron told USA Swimming. "It was a bit quicker than I was expecting, but in all it went well."
A native of Mission Viejo, California, Heron also took second in the 10K earlier at the meet in a time of 1:47:27.713. He has qualified for the American contingent headed to Pan Pacific Championships.
Sophomore Taylor Abbott took fifth in the 10K (1:48:09.792) and eighth in the 5K (54:50.6). He earned U.S. national team honors with his 10K performance.
Junior Sam Rice was 20th in the 10K (1:52:07.516).
