TAMPA, Fla. — Five Tennessee sprinters booked their tickets for the NCAA final site with their performances Friday during the NCAA East Preliminary Championships at USF Track & Field Stadium.
Two men and three women officially advanced to the NCAA final championship June 6-9 in Eugene, Oregon: Nathan Strother, Mustaqeem Williams, Shania Collins, Felecia Majors and Lenysse Dyer.
Strother earned a spot in the 400-meter run for the fourth time in his career. The senior booked his ticket to the championships in Eugene, Oregon, after posting a time of 44.90 seconds, the second-fastest time in heat 2 and fourth-best overall.
Majors and Dyer followed by qualifying in the women's 400m. Majors, who redshirted last season, is returning to the final site after posting the fifth-fastest qualifying time in 51.73. Dyer, a junior, will make her first NCAA individual appearance, running 12th in 52.15.
Williams and Collins both have the opportunity to run the 100m and 200m in Eugene, booking spots in their respective 100m fields.
Williams clocked a 10.22 to advance, grabbing the third automatic qualifying spot from heat 1.
Collins, the Lady Vols' 100m record holder, took second in the second heat in 11.09 to earn an automatic qualifying spot.
SUB-22: Collins and Williams returned to the track to post the fastest qualifying times in the 200m heading into Saturday's quarterfinal round.
With a thunderstorm bringing fierce wind and driving rain, Collins ran the 200m in 21.97 seconds. Aided by a tailwind of 5.3 meters per second, the time stands is the all-time, all-conditions collegiate best, according to the USTFCCCA. Collins is the first woman to run under 22 seconds during a collegiate season.
Junior Maia McCoy is also into the quarterfinals,
Williams' top time in the 200m among the men's competitors was 20.11 (+3.6).
HURDLERS ADVANCE: Freshman Alexis Duncan and sophomore Domonique Turner will run the 100m hurdles quarterfinals Saturday as well. Duncan, the SEC silver medalist, recorded a time of 13.22, and Turner was a career-best 13.28.
UP NEXT: The preliminary championships -- both the East Preliminaries in Tampa and the West Preliminaries in Sacramento, California -- are scheduled to conclude Saturday night.
Field events start at 8:45 a.m. Eastern with Stamatia Scarvelis in the hammer throw. Running starts at 12:30 p.m. with the 4x100m relays.
