May 24, 2018 | Track & Field
TAMPA, Fla. — Six Tennessee sprinters advanced to the quarterfinals Thursday to open the NCAA East Preliminary Championships at USF Track and Field Stadium.
Senior Shania Collins, just off her silver medal performance at the SEC Championships, recorded the second-fastest 100-meter time of 11.00 seconds. It was just .01 off her school-record time. She will be joined in the next round by junior teammate Maia McCoy, who ran the 22nd-fastest time (11.36).
The Lady Vols also had a pair of runners advance in the 400m: senior Felecia Majors (52.06; 6th) and Lenysse Dyer (52.46; 10th).
On the men's side, junior Mustaqeem Williams had the fifth-fastest qualifying time in the 100m (10.21).
Senior Nathan Strother moved on in the 400m, winning his heat in 45.90.
The quarterfinals for the 100m and 400m will be held Friday. Because of weather concerns, all running events have been moved up 30 minutes. The top 12 runners in the quarterfinals will move on to Oregon, the final site of the NCAA Track and Field Championships.
An evening thunderstorm delayed competition for nearly three hours with long jump wrapping up the day at 11:30 p.m.
Junior Stamatia Scarvelis narrowly missed qualifying for Oregon in the shot put, taking 14th in 16.06m (52-8.25).
Freshman Georgios Korakidis wrapped up his first year with the Vols with a 16th-place finish in men's hammer (65.39m, 214-6).
