Spring GPA Statistics Show Continued Academic Excellence Among Student-Athletes
May 22, 2018 | General
University of Tennessee student-athletes posted a 3.07 overall grade-point average (GPA) during the 2018 spring semester. That stands as the highest spring GPA in recorded UT history and ties the program's highest-ever single-semester GPA—set during the 2017 fall term.
Â
Tennessee student-athletes have now posted 11 consecutive semesters with a combined overall GPA of 3.00 or better and have accomplished that feat for seven straight spring terms, dating to 2012.
Â
"As a department, we talk frequently about fostering a culture that celebrates achievement, and these numbers serve as proof that the mission of academic excellence is effective here at Tennessee," Director of Athletics Phillip Fulmer said.
Â
"These statistics are a credit to the impact of the Thornton Center's mission and outstanding staff, the commitment to academic achievement shared across all our coaching staffs, and most of all the effort and discipline our student-athletes exhibit in the classroom. It's inspiring and something that we're all very proud of."
Â
This spring, 13 of Tennessee's 16 teams earned collective GPAs of 3.00 or better. That ties for the most UT teams ever to accomplish that feat (2015 fall semester).
Â
A school (recorded history) record 288 Vols and Lady Vols—60 percent of the student-athlete population—earned a GPA of 3.00 or better this spring, and 34 student-athletes posted a 4.00.
Â
Additionally, 143 student-athletes—30 percent—were recognized on their respective college's Dean's List.
