Williams Tied for 11th After First Round of NCAA Championship

STILLWATER, Okla. – Tennessee's Micheala Williams capped off her first NCAA Championship round on Friday with three pars over her last three holes to finish the day tied for 11th place with an even-par 72.
"Micheala played really solid today," head coach Judi Pavon said. "She was great off the tee and gave herself a lot of birdie opportunities. She only missed a couple of irons and with the high rough around the greens, it's tough to get up and down."
Williams began the round for UT with three straight pars before recording her first birdie on the par-4 fourth hole.
"I just wanted to get off to a solid start and I hit the first three greens and got the third putt to fall," Williams said. "My iron shots were really solid, I think I only missed two greens today."
The Athens, Alabama, native went on to card one bogey and another birdie on the front nine to take a score of 1-under into the turn. Williams then bogeyed No. 10 before carding her third and final birdie of the round on Hole 12.
"On the holes I bogeyed, I just missed the green a little right and got into that thick rough that was tough to chip out of. The birdies I had were from hitting wedges pretty close, but I had several looks for birdie that just missed," Williams added.
She carded two pars more pars and a bogey before tallying three straight pars to conclude the tournament with a first-round score of 72.
"The whole day was really good. She missed about three good birdie chances on the back nine but other than that she didn't waste any shots," Pavon said.
Williams will tee off the second round from Hole 10 at 2:10 p.m. ET tomorrow. She is paired with Oregon State's Nicole Schroeder and California's Marthe Wold.
"I'm pretty confident for the next three days. My goal is to continue to play solid and commit to every shot and take it on shot at a time," Williams said.
In the team standings, just 10 strokes separate the top nine teams with No. 6 Southern California leading the field with a 3-over 291. No. 1 Alabama and No. 3 UCLA sit in second (+4) and third place (+6), respectively. Individually, Wake Forest's Jennifer Kupcho leads the field with a 7-under 65.
