Four Teams Earn NCAA Public Recognition Awards
May 16, 2018 | General, Women's Golf
Four Tennessee athletic programs have been recognized for academic excellence and have earned coveted Public Recognition Awards from the NCAA after scoring in the top 10 percent of their Division I peers in the most recent Academic Progress Rates (APR).
This year's listing of Public Recognition Award recipients was released Wednesday by the NCAA. Tennessee's honorees—each of which posted perfect multi-year APR scores of 1,000—were men's cross country, women's golf, women's tennis and women's track & field.
"I applaud every program earning a Public Recognition Award this year for their commitment to going above and beyond to prepare students for life after college through academic achievement," NCAA President Mark Emmert said.
This marks the ninth consecutive year that Tennessee's women's tennis program has earned an NCAA Public Recognition Award. The women's track & field program has earned the award for each of the last three years under head coach Beth Alford-Sullivan, while men's cross country and women's golf are receiving the honor for the second straight year.
The women's golf program, under the direction of head coach Judi Pavon, has earned a Public Recognition Award in six of the last 10 years.
The APR is an annual scorecard of academic achievement calculated for all Division I sports teams. The APR measures eligibility, graduation and retention each semester or academic term and provides a clear picture of the academic performance for each team in every sport. All teams must meet an academic threshold of 930 to qualify for the postseason and can face penalties for continued low academic performance.
APR scores for all Division I institutions and teams will be released later this month.
