With plenty of field event finals and key sprint preliminaries, Saturday's competition is critical for Sunday's finish at the SEC Track and Field Championships.
The 200-meter heats were held Friday, but the rest of the sprint preliminaries dominate the running schedule, which is capped by teh finals of the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Both the heptathlon and decathlon will conclude Saturday with Tennessee junior Maya Neal in the medal hunt with a third-place standing through four events.Â
Coming to Tom Black Track? Here's are some key events for the Vols on Saturday:
HEPTATHLON
Long Jump - 10 a.m.
Javelin - 11:30 a.m.
800m - 1:30 p.m.
Junior Maya Neal is in medal contention heading into the second day of the heptathlon. Through four events, she sits in third place with 3,397 points. She had personal bests in both the 100m hurdles (13.72) and the shot put (12.49m/40-11.75). Â
Her strongest event, the long jump, is on Saturday's slate, along with javelin and the 800m.Â
SHOT PUT
Men - 3 p.m.
Women - 7:30 p.m.
The Vols have a pair of emerging stars in the men's shot put ring: freshmen Jordan West and Joseph Maxwell. West, from Rahway, New Jersey, broke the 36-year-old program record with a mark of 19.70m (64-7.75) set two weeks ago at Arkansas. The throw ranks third in the conference and 11th in the country. Maxwell could also be in scoring contention; he is seeded seventh (18.73m/61-5.5).Â
The Tennessee women also have two throwers ranked in the top eight of shot put in Stamatia Scarves and Tamia Crockett. Scarvelis won the hammer throw by two inches Friday afternoon and looks to return to the awards stand in the shot put. She is ranked fourth (16.21m/53-2.25). Crockett put together a breakout performance last week with a mark of 16.06m (52-8.25), which ranks fifth.Â
SPRINT PRELIMS
Women's 100m Hurdles - 6:30 p.m.
Women's 400m - 7:55 p.m.
Men's 400m - 8:20 p.m.
Women's 100m - 8:45 p.m.
Men's 100m - 9:10 p.m.
Saturday sprinting could set the table for big points Sunday for the Vols. The Lady Vols lead off the in the 100m hurdles with two runners ranked in the top 10 in the conference: Alexis Duncan at No. 5 (12.92) and Domonique Turner at No. 10 (13.18).Â
The 400m on both the men's and women's side features upperclassmen stars, headlined by Nathan Strother. The senior enters the meet with the fastest 400m time in the SEC and fifth in nation at 45.01. He was second in the 400m at SEC Indoors earlier this year.Â
Senior Shania Collins clocked the fastest preliminary time in the 200m Friday afternoon (22.40) and looks to book her spot in the 100m final as well. She has the sixth-fastest 100m time in the SEC this season of 11.10, which tied the Tennessee program record.
In the men's 100m, juniors Mustaqeem Williams and Kwantreyl McConico also hope to go two-for-two in sprint finals. Both are already in the 200m finals with the No. 2 and 8 qualifying times. Williams, the reigning 200m SEC Indoor champion, ranks ninth in the 100m (10.22). McConico ranks 14th (10.30).Â

Men - 9:55 p.m.
Stay late to catch a pair of Volunteer State natives the steeplechase. The Vols have a pair of runners ranked in the top eight in the conference with Alex Crigger in fifth (8:59.19) and Wesley Robinson in eighth (9:06.02).Â
Crigger, a freshman from Johnson City, Tenn., dropped 30 seconds off his previous college best time in the steeplechase two weeks ago at Arkansas. Robinson, a sophomore from Oak Ridge, Tenn., also posted his best time at Arkansas' National Relay Championships.Â
