BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Tennessee junior Sadie Hammond earned a spot on the 2018 SEC Community Service Team, the Southeastern Conference announced Tuesday.
The selection marks the second year in a row that Hammond has been named to the team.Â
"I'm so grateful to be named to the SEC Community Service Team," Hammond said. "As students-athletes, we have a voice and influence on our teams, campus, and community. It's extremely important to spread the joy of sport to as many people as possible because it can have a tremendously, positive impact on someone's life. Sport has the amazing ability to bring people together. I'm so grateful to be at a university where they give us the opportunity and resources to use our platform to create positive change."
The SEC sponsors Community Service Teams in all 21 sports. The award looks to highlight athletes from the SEC who give back to their community in superior service efforts.
Hammond has spent numerous hours giving back to the East Tennessee community. During the 2017-18 academic year, she accumulated 158 total volunteer hours earned while participating in several events.
This past summer, Hammond spent 75.5 hours of volunteer time assisting with the MOBALE (Maine Organization for Blind Athletic and Leadership Education) Summer Sports Camp in her home state of Maine. Hammond also participated in UT's VOLeaders Academy where she worked with children in orphanages, volunteered at various sport skill camps and visited with university students for 70 hours of volunteering opportunities overseas in Vietnam.
Tennessee begins the SEC Tournament tomorrow, facing Alabama in the first round at 2 p.m. The Lady Vols are hosting the event this year at Barksdale Stadium, and all matches are free admission.Â
