Women’s Tennis Adds Two to 2019 Class
December 20, 2018 | Women's Tennis
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The Tennessee women's tennis team added the third and fourth members to its 2019 class on Thursday in Julie Ball and Callie Creath.
Ball will join the Lady Vols for spring 2019 competition. Creath will join Tennessee in the fall of 2019.
Ball has an 10.79 UTR and is a Great Britain native and will be one of three mid-year enrollees for the Lady Vols, along with fellow 2019 signees Rebeka Mertena and Maia Haumuller.
"This past summer, I was in Spain recruiting when I got a call from a friend at AMG Sports suggesting that I take a look at one of her players who is looking to come to school in January," head coach Alison Ojeda said. "In my opinion, it takes both a special person and program to be able to come in mid-semester and be successful.
"The second I met Julie, I knew we were going to be perfect for each other. Julie thrives when she's around motivated and passionate people, which is what Tennessee is all about. She's also incredibly intelligent and mature. Julie is going to bring a substantial amount of experience to our team and we are all excited for her to join our program this January."
Creath, an Austin, Texas native, has a 10.09 UTR and is rated as a five-star recruit by TennisRecruiting.net. She is a member of the Austin Tennis Academy.
"I have been fortunate to grow up with some great coaches as a junior tennis player in the state of Texas. One of those coaches is current director of Austin Tennis Academy, Jack Newman," Ojeda said. "Jack's academy creates a culture of internal motivation, which is the best way to describe Callie Creath.
"When Jack called me and said he has a player I just have to see, I was on a flight within the next few days. Callie embodies everything that being a Tennessee Volunteer is all about. I am absolutely thrilled that she is joining our program. Callie is the type of athlete that every coach desires to have on their team. While she is improving, she will be helping each and every one of her teammates to improve as well. That's what Callie does, she pushes you to get better."
Added Newman: "The Austin Tennis Academy could not be more pleased that Callie Creath is committing to play for coach Alison Ojeda at the University of Tennessee. Callie embodies all of the character traits that I know coach Ojeda is looking for: work ethic, drive, and a commitment to excellence."
The Lady Vols will open their spring season on Monday, Jan. 14 with a doubleheader against North Alabama.
