Brown Sets American Record with U.S. Relay Team

HANGZHOU, China — Tennessee junior swimmer Erika Brown can now add "American record holder" to her list of 2018 accomplishments.Â
Brown (Charlotte, N.C.) swam the anchor leg in the record-setting 800-meter freestyle relay at the FINA Short Course World Championships, bringing home the silver for the Americans in 7:35.30.
Swimming in her first final of the meet, Brown joined Leah Smith, Mallory Comerford and Melanie Margalis on the podium. The U.S. team broke the previous 2010 record by three seconds (7:38.42) with Brown leading the way with a split of 1:52.86.Â
China won the final in 7:34.08.Â
Brown is wrapping up a breakout 2018 season in which she won six SEC gold medals and broke four individual school records. She was the NCAA runner-up in both the 50-yard freestyle and 100 butterfly.Â
