Tennessee welcomes back more than 50 VFL's in event at Holston Hills Country Club
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- The University of Tennessee men's golf program held its annual alumni event at Holston Hills Country Club Friday afternoon.
More than 50 VFL's returned to Knoxville for the event as they had a chance to interact with current member of the Tennessee golf program.
Vols from all different eras came back to event at Holston Hills for a lunch event with coach Brennan Webb and the rest of the current Vols roster. One such alumni that was in attendance was Jim Gallagher Jr. who played for Tennessee from 1979-1983.Â
"It's really great to come back and see all the different eras come back," Gallagher Jr. said. "You have guys that are older than me that came back, some of the younger guys and then the current guys. It is cool to see the excitement with the success the team has had early on this year."
So far this season, Tennessee has won two tournament titles and has been ranked as high as fifth in the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) poll. The Vols rank 21st in the latest edition after capturing their third top three finish in four events this fall.
"The future is bright here and that helps with recruiting seeing the success, the new facility going up and seeing how involved the athletic department is getting," Gallagher Jr. said. "College golf is becoming bigger than it has ever been. The biggest key for every program is to have their alumni involved to keep building the excitement. And we are starting to see that excitement the last couple of years with this reunion."
At the end of the event, coach Webb made an announcement of a new Tennessee Player of the Year Award that will be named the Jim Gallagher Jr. Award in his honor. Gallagher Jr. went on to have a successful professional career totaling five PGA Tour wins to go along with six top 25 finishes in Major Championships including a runner-up finish at the 1992 PGA Championship. The next year he went on to help the U.S. claim the Ryder Cup Trophy in England.
