November 15, 2018 | Swimming & Diving
AUSTIN, Texas — Tennessee senior Zhipeng (Colin) Zeng placed eighth on 3-meter springboard Thursday at the Texas Diving Invitational.
Zeng, the No. 3 qualifier after morning preliminaries, took eighth in the final with a six-dive score of 340.40.
Freshman Matthew Wade nearly made the final top eight for the second day, finishing 12th in prelims (332.40). Sophomore Will Hallam was not far behind in 14th (330.60), followed by senior Nick Rusek in 18th (307.00).
Senior Rachel Rubadue was 18th in the women's 1-meter springboard competition to lead the Lady Vols (248.35).
The meet concludes Friday with the first platform diving competition of the year with the women beginning at 11:30 a.m. Eastern (10:30 a.m. Central) and the men at 2:35 p.m. Eastern (1:35 p.m. Central). Both competitions will be aired on the Longhorn Network.

"Colin had a really solid prelim, what we're used to seeing from him. In the final, he had a decent first dive, phenomenal second dive. He missed his third dive a little. Colin was looking extremely strong and clicking very well. On his fourth dive, the reverse three an a half, he skyrocketed his takeoff and went flying over vertical. His next dive was short of vertical. Against this world class competition, we wanted to do the front four and a half. In the final of this caliber, we wanted to try this newer dive. He missed a number of his dives off good setups, but diving in a pool he's never been in against a stellar field. The final didn't go as well as we'd like, but I saw some good things. He wasn't alone in his performance tonight. Some of the youngsters took advantage of the veterans who were making mistakes on really big dives.
"In the women's event, we saw some positive things, but we need to be sharper. We need to work on some things when we get back to get ready for this situation next time.
"I'm very pleased for Matt. As a freshman, this is a huge eye opener for him. He missed his second to last dive, but otherwise he's knocking on the door for the final and possibly in it. I'm really pleased with his attitude and strength. This will be an invaluable experience for him. Will and Nick have been out with injury but have been getting back on track. We're hopeful Keegan can be ready for tomorrow. I don't think we've been in this challenging of a meet this early in the season in years. It gives me an excellent opportunity to get us ready for championship season."
