Thronson, Thiessen Earn SEC XC Honors

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Tennessee cross country runners Katie Thronson and Karl Thiessen were named SEC Freshmen of the Week, the conference office announced Tuesday.Â
Thronson (Spokane, Washington) earned her second SEC weekly honor for the Lady Vols after leading the team to a second-place finish in the open 6K race at the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational. She finished third overall in 21 minutes, 1.9 seconds.Â
In her first three collegiate races, Thronson has finished in the top three. She has been Tennessee's top finisher in each competition.Â
Thiessen (Abingdon, Va.) was the No. 2 finisher for the Vols in the championship 8K race at Wisconsin, placing 95th overall in 24:25.8. He placed seventh among freshmen in the field.Â
As a team, the Vols finished 23rd of 33 teams, a slate of competitors that included 19 nationally ranked teams. On Tuesday, Tennessee rose to second in the USTFCCCA South Region men's rankings.
The Vols have just more regular-season cross country meet: the Blazer Classic on Oct. 12 in Birmingham, Alabama. The SEC Championships will be held Oct. 26 at Auburn.Â
