Roswall, Scalise Pace UT To Strong Start In Opener
September 08, 2017 | Men's Golf
ROCKY FACE, Ga. – Freshman Chase Roswall fired a 5-under-par 67, and senior Lorenzo Scalise carded a 4-under 68 Friday, propelling the Tennessee men's golf team to second place after the first round of the Carpet Capital Collegiate at The Farm Golf Club.
The Vols, who tallied a 6-under team score of 282 in their opening round of the season, stand one stroke behind leader Florida (281). Georgia Tech is third at 287 (-1), followed by Auburn at 289 (+1) and LSU and South Carolina at 292 (+4). Tennessee's first-round total was its best first-day score ever in the program's 30th year of participation in the tournament.
Roswall, a native of Bristol, Tenn., who attended Baylor School in Chattanooga, stands in second place individually after his first round of collegiate golf. He debuted with a birdie on his first hole, the 388-yard, par-4 No. 10, and finished with five of them on a day that saw him turn in a bogey-free scorecard.
After compiling a 34 on his first nine holes, the rookie birdied three more times over the final nine to post a 33. Thanks to birdies on two of his last three holes, Roswall heads into day two in second place by one stroke behind individual leader Alejandro Tosti of Florida (66).
Scalise, the team captain from Milan, Italy, also tallied five birdies, including three on his last five holes. That push moved him into third place, just two shots back of the leader. Two of his birdies came on par-5 holes, including the 518-yard No. 15 and the 566-yard No. 9, on which he finished the day.
The senior reached his best-ever score at this tournament by opening with a 35 on the back nine and closing with a 33 over the final nine holes. His previous best at The Farm was a final-round 69 a year ago.
Sophomore Jake Meenhorst (Auckland, New Zealand) sits in a tie for 22nd with a 1-over 73. Bolstered by a pair of birdies, he was even on his first nine holes. He followed with a 37 over his final nine during his first appearance at this tourney.
Fellow sophomores Rhys Nevin (Cheshire, England) and Brayden Garrison (Nolensville, Tenn.) both checked in with a 74, standing 2-over and tying for 32nd place after 18 holes.
Tennessee, which tied South Carolina for most birdies in the first round with 18, will begin play on the front nine on Saturday, starting with Garrison at 9:30 a.m. The Vols will be paired with Florida and Georgia Tech.
