Three Vol Golfers Finish In Top 15 At Belle Meade Country Club
Final Leaderboard
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – University of Tennessee golfer Brayden Garrison fired a 3-under-par 69 in the final round on Friday to finish the 102nd Tennessee State Amateur Championship in a tie for second place with a 5-under score of 283 at Belle Meade Country Club in Nashville.
Garrison, a sophomore from Nolensville, carded rounds of 70-71-73-69 to notch a tie for runner-up honors with three others, just a stroke behind victor John Swoboda of Mount Juliet. The Vol posted 19 birdies over 72 holes, including six on Friday.
"I am really pleased with the way I played today and this entire week," Garrison said. "I was especially happy with the way I conducted myself throughout the week.
"Yesterday was a very important day, because I did not have my best ball-striking day and depended on more short game to keep me in the tournament. I was a little nervous to start the day, because I did not have a very good warm up on the range, but I managed to find something on the golf course and put together a great round tee to green, and I kept my emotions in check when things went south halfway through my round.
"Unfortunately, my best swing of the day was on the par-3 16th, when I probably hit the furthest nine iron of my life straight over the pin and into the water from 165 into the wind. Even though I didn't finish as well as I would have liked, there is nothing but positives that I can take this week, and I'm excited to get back to school after what I would consider a very successful summer."
Sophomore Nolan Ray from Brentwood and freshman Spencer Cross of Sevierville made it an impressive total of three Vols in the top 15, as they finished 10th at 1-under (287) and 14th at 1-over (289), respectively. Cross matched his first-round score with a 2-under 70 on Friday, while Ray equaled his second-day performance with a 71 over the final 18 holes of the tourney.
Three other UT men were in action in the tournament as well. Freshman Chase Roswall of Bristol posted his lowest round of the event on the final day, turning in a 71 and finishing tied for 41st at 8-over (296). Sophomore Hunter Wolcott of Burns tied for 45th at 9-over (297), while graduate Jack Smith tied for 55th at 13-over (301). Roswall (71) and Smith (73) posted their best rounds on Friday to close out the event.
