Tianna Bartoletta won the USATF Long Jump Championship with the three best jumps of the competition
SACRAMENTO, California - #VFL Tianna Bartoletta won the American Championship in the long jump competition on day three of the USATF Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Sacramento State's Hornet Stadium.
Bartoletta (formerly Tianna Madison) had already booked her spot at the World Championship as an automatic qualifier, but that didn't stop her from dominating the competition at the USATF Championship. Bartoletta recorded the top three marks of the competition as she jumped 7.05m (23-1.75) on her final attempt after leaping 7.01m (23-0) on her first and fourth attempts. All six of her marks, would have placed her in the competition's top three. Bartoletta is a two-time world champion (2005, 2015) and the reigning Olympic Gold Medalist in the long jump.
After claiming a spot on the United States team at the World Championship, Christian Coleman began his quest to make the team in a second event on Saturday. Coleman posted the second-fastest time in the first round of the 200m to ensure his spot in the semifinals. He won his heat by .26 seconds as he crossed the line in 20.34. This was his slowest 200m race of the season, but still good enough to finish with the second-fastest time as he was running his fourth race in the past three days. Yesterday, Coleman clinched his berth on the team with a second-place finish in the 100m. He and #VFL Justin Gatlin finished in the top two places as the only two Americans to record times under 10 seconds.
Tavis Bailey fell 14 inches short of claiming a spot on the World Championship team as he finished in fifth place in the discus competition. Bailey, a 2016 Olympian in the discus, posted his best throw on his fifth attempt as the discus travelled 60.50m (198-6). That was an improvement over his mark of 59.96m (196-9), which he needed to ensure himself a spot in the finals.
Felicia Brown finished in 23rd place in the first round of the women's 200m dash as she posted a time of 23.48. Dezerea Bryant, a volunteer assistant coach with Tennessee, posted a time of 23.03 seconds to record the 12th-fastest qualifying time. Bryant will advance to the semifinals tomorrow.
