BATON ROUGE, La. -- Tennessee track and field posted another school record as they wrapped up competition on day two of the SEC Relays at Bernie Moore Stadium on Saturday.
Christian Coleman ran the 100m in 9.93 seconds, posting the top time in the country this year. This is the first time this year that Coleman has run with the wind at his back and he posted a mark that would have been a school record had it not been wind-assisted. Coleman ran with a +3.2 m/s wind at his back. The mark is tied for the fourth best mark recorded in the world this year regardless of the wind. Coleman remains undefeated throughout the outdoor season in all individual events.
After Stamatia Scarvelis set the school record in the hammer throw yesterday, Cameron Brown followed suit on the men's side. The redshirt senior posted a mark of 68.19m (223-9) on his first attempt to become the all-time best hammer thrower in school history. Brown passed Wes Boudreau, whose mark of 67.84m (222-7) had stood since 1996. Brown placed second in the competition and ranks 13th in the NCAA in the hammer throw.
Brown wasn't the only Vol with a fantastic day in the hammer throw ring. Seth Whitener moved into third place in school history as he tossed the hammer 66.26m (217-5) on his second attempt. Matthew Zajac made it three-for-three for Vols setting personal bests as he crossed the 200-foot barrier. Zajac finished in seventh with a throw of 61.25m (200-11) and moved into ninth on the school's all-time top 10 list.
The women's throws group posted three of the top six marks in the shot put. Cassie Wertman took third place with a mark of 16.80m (55-1.5). Scarvelis followed up two personal bests from yesterday with a season-best throw on Saturday as she claimed fourth place. Scarvelis putted 16.56m (54-4) and Tamia Crockett finished in sixth place with a throw of 14.71m (48-3.25).
Tennessee finished in seventh place with 24.5 points as the SEC Relays scored all the relays events including a throws and jumps relays and combined the men's and women's scores. The SEC Relays was competed between nine SEC teams including 14 ranked squads.
Zach Long finished third in the 1500m race with a time of 3:49.75.
