"I was really pleased with the round today," said Head Coach Judi Pavon. "In the middle day of a tournament, it is always so critical that you don't lose any ground on the leaders and that you keep yourself in contention. We did a great job of that today. Towards the middle of the back nine we lost some shots but then made some birdies at the end to hang right in there."
Newell started the tournament for UT with a birdie on No. 1. The Florida native went on to card five pars in a row before birdying the par-four seventh hole. She then parred out her last two holes on the front nine.
After recording par on Hole 10, Newell shot a birdie on the par-five 11th to earn a share of the individual lead. The junior then carded her fourth birdie of the round on No. 14 to take a one-stroke lead into the last four holes of the round.
Newell shot even-par through her final holes, but Georgia's Huang Lee posted birdies on Nos. 16 and 18 to pass Newell and take a one-stroke lead over the field.
"I had a pretty solid round today again," said Newell. "I got off to a good start which was really important to me and I made a couple of good par saves during the middle of my round which really kept me going. Towards the end, I made a long putt for birdie which really helped me."
Newell tallied her second sub-70 round of the tournament with a score of 68 and will begin the final round in second place (137, -7).
Williams recovered from a rocky start with two birdies and then shot par on her last seven holes to car an even round of 72.
The Alabama native remains tied for 11th place with a one-under 143.
Both senior Lucia Polo and junior Blakesly Warren posted a one-over 73 in the round. Polo enters the final round even with par (T20, 144) while Warren is tied for 40th place (149,+5).
Senior Hannah Pietila enters the final round with a 36-hole score of 155 (T64, +11).
No. 8-ranked Florida leads the field with a 12-under 564 while No. 6 Georgia sits in second with score of 569 (-7). Arkansas, the 13th-ranked team in the country, is in third place with a six-under 570.
