GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Tennessee track and field notched five top-five performances and six personal records on a busy day two at the Pepsi Florida Relays held at James G. Pressly Stadium at Percy Beard Track.
Stamatia Scarvelis set a school record in the hammer throw for the second consecutive meet as she bettered her own mark with a throw of 64.86m (212-9). Scarvelis set the school record last weekend in the Rust Buster with a personal best of 61.30 (201-1) before adding 11 feet and 8 inches to her distance this weekend. Scarvelis finished third in the competition, but posted the sixth-best hammer throw in the NCAA this year. Scarvelis also took eighth place in the discus invitational with a throw of 51.55m (169-1).
While Scarvelis was representing Tennessee in the invitational section, senior Candice Butler was showcasing her abilities in the college division of the hammer throw. Butler bested her previous career best on all five of her fair throws, including her second throw of 59.38m (194-10). That toss moved Butler from fifth to third on Tennessee’s all-time hammer throw list.
Redshirt senior Cameron Brown recorded the second-best hammer toss in school history with a toss of 66.47m (218-1). Brown finished in eighth place in the competition, but had the 12th-best hammer throw in the NCAA this year.
Nathan Strother placed second in the men’s 400m dash with a time of 45.58, collecting the second-best time in the NCAA to date in the outdoor season. It is also the sixth-fastest time in the world this year. Ari Cogdell took 16th with a time of 47.42. Layla White competed in the women’s 400m and she finished in 21st with a time of 54.39.
Shania Collins and Maia McCoy both set personal bests to open up the day on the track for the Vols. Collins posted a time of 11.49 (+1.3) to claim 13th place overall. Collins bettered her previous career best of 11.63 which was set two years ago. McCoy followed that performance by winning her heat of the 100m dash in a time of 11.68 seconds.
Cidae’a Woods notched a fourth place finish in the women’s long jump invitational. Woods was sitting in 10th place entering her third and final jump of the first round. She was in danger of missing the finals of the competition, but she stepped up with a leap of 5.97m (+0.7) to move into fourth place.
Freshman Darryl Sullivan took seventh place in the high jump competition, as he was able to clear 2.06m (6-9.00). Sullivan was making his first outdoor appearance after tying for 12th place in the high jump at the NCAA Indoor Championship.
Brooklynn Broadwater claimed 20th place in the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:00.96. Broadwater was competing in a hurdles event for the first time in her collegiate career.
Zach Long closed the evening with a personal best in the 1500m race. Long crossed the line in a time of 3:47.03 as he finished ninth overall and third in his heat.
