INDIANAPOLIS — Eight members of the Tennessee women’s team open competition at the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships beginning Wednesday evening at the IU Natatorium.
The championships open with just one event Wednesday, the 800-yard freestyle relay, at 6 p.m. Eastern. The meet begins in earnest Thursday with preliminaries beginning at 10 a.m. Eastern.
The Tennessee women finished the NCAA championships in 13th last year, highlighted by a second-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay. The Vols have recorded top-15 finishes the last 11 years.
Small, who won Tennessee's second-ever SEC title in the 200-yard individual medley last month, automatically qualified for NCAAs in all three of her events, setting school records in all three at the conference meet. She is the fourth seed in the 200 IM (1:53.31) and the eighth seed in the 400 IM (4:04.93).
Banic captured the SEC 50 freestyle title and enters NCAAs seeded fifth (21.54). She is also seeded 11th in the 100 butterfly.
Toussaint enters her final NCAA championship looking to build on her five All-America honors a year ago. She finished eighth in the 100 backstroke last year; she and Banic were part of Tennessee's NCAA runner-up 200 freestyle relay team.
In diving, Rubadue was an honorable mention All-American in the 1-meter springboard competition.
