Trio Earns SEC Weekly Swimming & Diving Honors
December 05, 2017 | Swimming & Diving
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — After a record-setting weekend at the Tennessee Invitational, three Vols earned SEC swimming and diving weekly honors, the conference announced Tuesday.Â
Breaking three school records, sophomore Erika Brown took home SEC Swimmer of the Week honors for a second time, and junior Rachel Rubadue was the SEC Diver of the Week for the women after a three-event sweep. Redshirt junior Colin Zeng was named SEC Diver of the Week on the men's side for a fourth time this season.
Brown enjoyed a breakout weekend at the Tennessee Invitational, posting new program records in the 50-yard freestyle (21.50), the 100 freestyle (47.54) and the 100 butterfly (50.33). Her 100 butterfly time was the fastest in the country this year and automatically qualified her for the NCAA championships in March, as did her time in the 50 freestyle.Â
A native of Charlotte, North Carolina, Brown posted NCAA B-cut times in the 100 freestyle, 200 freestyle (1:45.59), 100 backstroke (52.47) and 200 butterfly (1:56.11). She was part of four winning relays for the Lady Vols.Â
Rubadue, from Columbus, Ohio, won all three diving competitions during the meet, posting her first victories of the season on 3-meter and platform. She scored 322.80 on 3-meter springboard, her best result in the event in a year.Â
Zeng, from Fujian, China, swept all three men's diving competitions to reign as diver of the week once again. He scored 460.20 in his first platform diving competition as a Vol, breaking the program's oldest diving record (Gabi Chereches, 2001). He also posted a season-best score of 422.55 on 1-meter springboard, the third-highest score in program history.
This fall, Zeng has recorded four wins on 1-meter, three wins on 3-meter and a victory on platform.Â
The UT swimmers wrapped up competition for the semester with the Tennessee Invitational, but the divers still have one more meet to go. The squad will compete at the Auburn Diving Invitational (Dec. 17-19).Â
